‘Fundamental values should be reinforced’
Thrissur: Fundamental values like compassion should be reinforced to help the youth emerge out of the alienation they are facing in the contemporary society, said eminent Mararthi film director Sumitra Bhave. Attempts to impose cultural values on them would only aid the revivalist forces, she added.
“The happenings in the world, changes in political and economic fields, phenomenon like globalization and approach to development, all these has contributed to alienation, because all these have implications on the values of life,” said Bhave who was here to attend the International Film festival of Thrissur (IFFT).

She was the head of the jury that selected the best debut director and film.
Sumitra said through her film ‘Turtle’ which was screened at the IFFT she was trying to tell the young people to go come out of their little shell and look at the world, to learn to give something to others, without really expecting anything in return and satisfy their inner self. “There are no villains in my films, because I don't think anyone is a villain, we should accept people as they are and support them to slowly come out of the shells they are trapped in,” she said.
According to her the earlier generation were better adjusted people, as they had definite views, goals and values. She conceded that leading a peaceful life in the contemporary society had become complex because of various factors like market forces, inadequacies of the conservative socialist ideals to address the emerging challenges and schemes of the revivalist forces to appropriate the vacuum created consequentially.
