KOCHI: Curtains will rise on Sunday to offer Kochiites a taste of professional theatre. From across Kerala, theatre groups are coming to the city to stage plays for this
Onam.
'Natakakalam', the six-day theatre festival with 10 plays dealing with a wide spectrum of themes, will be inaugurated by excise and ports minister K Babu at the Durbar Hall.
The fest is being held as part of 'Lavanyam', the programme organized by the district administration and tourism department to celebrate Onam.
The theatre festival, held in association with Act, a centre for theatre, will feature plays of diverse genres and treatment picked up from the contemporary theatre. It is for the first time the city is witnessing theatre fest that spans six days during Onam. The first day will see Kallurutty, the play written and directed by theatre maestro Kavalam Narayana Panicker. The play deals with a myth that is popular among the Mavilar tribe of North Kerala.
On the second day Suddhikalasham, a play by the Kerala People's Art Club (KPAC) conveying strong social and political messages, will be staged in the evening. The third day will feature After the silence and Adukkalayil ninnu arangatehkku, the play that marked the beginning of social reforms in Kerala.
'Natakakalam' will also witness Koonan, a solo performance by Jayaprakash Kuloor that was presented in more than 500 stages across the country. Panchali Sapadham, a Tamil traditional drama, Vaidehi Parayunnathu, Janmadinam, Mazhapattu and a modern day adaptation of G Sankara Pillai's Etho Chirakadiyochakal will also be staged during the festival.
