Kochi: Ernakulam Rural police arrested two women for allegedly smuggling as much as seven kilograms of ganja into the district at Kalady on Monday. The arrested individuals were Swarnalatha Digal, 29 and Geetanjali Bahera, 35, both from Udayagiri in Kandhamal, Odisha.
A special investigation team led by Perumbavoor ASP and Kalady police arrested the accused. Police said the ganja was smuggled on a KSRTC superfast bus travelling from Kozhikode to Kottarakkara.
The accused were arrested following a tip-off received by district police chief (Ernakulam Rural) Vaibhav Saxena. The special investigation team conducted a search on the bus and discovered the contraband hidden in their handbags. Police said the accused admitted that the cannabis was brought from Odisha. They were booked under the NDPS Act. The accused were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
The investigation team included Perumbavoor ASP Shakti Singh Arya, SIs Josy M Johnson, OA Unni, Shaji, ASI PA Abdul Manaf, TA Afsal, Varghese T Venatt and senior CPOs Benny Isaac, Shijo Paul, Arish Aliyar and Jose Abraham.
