GUWAHATI: Daytime temperatures have begun rising above normal levels across northeast regions over the past week, indicating warmer weather approaching in late February, according to Met officials.
Data from IMD weather stations in the northeast shows that maximum temperatures during roughly the past week are hovering at or above normal levels. Temperatures have occasionally varied between ‘appreciably above normal', ‘appreciably below normal', ‘below normal' or ‘markedly below normal' at certain stations.
On Monday, Agartala recorded the northeast's highest maximum temperature at 28.2 degrees Celsius, with Lengpui (Mizoram) at 27.8 degree Celsius and Guwahati at 27.5 degrees Celsius, all within normal ranges. Shillong, typically cool, registered an ‘above normal' maximum temperature (17.5 degrees Celsius) on Monday. On Sunday, five IMD stations in the northeast logged ‘above normal' maximum temperatures: Passighat in Arunachal Pradesh (26.3 degrees Celsius), Shillong (18.5 degree Celsius), North Lakhimpur (27.4 degrees Celsius), Jorhat (27 degrees Celsius) and Dibrugarh (27.6 degrees Celsius).
"Maximum temperatures over the past week mostly remain either normal or above normal throughout northeast, while minimum temperatures are predominantly normal. This suggests warmer conditions ahead in Febr, although Feb remains categorised within the winter season as per the climatological calendar," a senior IMD official informed TOI on Monday.
Arunachal Pradesh may experience unique weather patterns this week, with IMD predicting rainfall and snowfall at several locations from February 10 to 12, including heavy rainfall on February 10 and 11. Light rainfall is expected over Assam during Feb 10 to 13 and in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during Feb 10 to 12.
