KOLKATA: The mason, Md Hamruj Alam (38), who allegedly murdered Bansdroni businessman Dilip Mukherjee (78) and his wife Swapna (71), was inebriated when he had sneaked through the open main gate and waited near the staircase on July 28.
Hours before that Alam had come to the spot and carried out a recce. Cops claimed Alam had committed the crime alone.
“We are still investigating if others are involved,” said joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Sharma.
Around 9pm, when Swapna came down to shut the main door, Alam pounced on her and killed her there. “He then went upstairs and tried to choke Dilip. He forced him to show all the almirahs where he kept money. Dilip did as directed and Alam took out whatever he could. Later, he killed Dilip,” said an investigating officer, adding they recovered Rs 38,000 in cash, a watch and a gold anklet.
Sharma said several private CCTVs helped them crack the case. “It was at 11.03pm when Alam left the Bansdroni residence, two hours after the carried the first
murder. He switched off Swapna’s mobile phone at 11.40pm. We traced him to that spot and as we walked, we found this stretch can be covered in that exact time,” said Sharma.
Sleuths said Alam left for Barsoi the next afternoon with all the loot.
