They included police commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti, Opposition leader Partha Chatterjee and transport minister Ranjit Kundu.
Barely able to speak, Barun asked the city police chief to "get him justice". "Haat gechhe, subichar jeno pai (I have lost my arm, I should get justice)." His wife is heavily sedated.
Both drivers claim they are innocent. "The 12C bus came and hit me. I tried my best to avoid a head-on collision and swerved towards the tram-tracks but couldn't save them," Somnath said. But the statements of the victims contradicts Somnath's claim. Asim Das, who suffered a head injury, recalls the minibus overtaking a car and crossing over to the opposite lane.
From Thursday, police will go on an overdrive to rein in overspeeding and overtaking by bus and minibus drivers. Chakrabarti met with the top brass of traffic police to chalk out a plan to rein in bus drivers. Five mobile teams will be on the move between 11 am and 6 pm when rash driving is at its peak.
"The teams will have an inspector, three-four constables and traffic policemen. This drive is basically against buses and minibuses," said an officer.
Police have identified the roads where a majority of accidents take place Old Court House Street, Strand Road, Dufferin Road, Mayo Road, JLN Road, AJC Bose Road, Casuarina Avenue, Syed Amir Ali Avenue, Central Avenue and part of BT Road. Errant drivers may be arrested, said an officer.
