Compliance with packaging rules urged in e-commerce
Lucknow: The state govt has asked e-commerce platforms to ensure full compliance with the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 within the next month. The act relates to the production and sale of packaged goods.
The decision was taken during a meeting in state capital on Thursday which was chaired by principal secretary, department of consumer affairs, Govt of Uttar Pradesh, Ranvir Prasad, and attended by representatives of major e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, Zepto, Nykaa, Spencers, Blinkit, Bigbasket and others.
The move comes in the wake of widespread non-compliance observed on various e-commerce platforms.
The department of legal metrology, represented by controller legal metrology, Uttar Pradesh, Abhishek Goyal, along with other officials, emphasised the mandatory requirements under the Packaged Commodities Rules. Goyal delivered a PowerPoint presentation detailing the key compliance aspects for e-commerce platforms, including displaying the name and complete address of the manufacturer, packer, or importer of pre-packaged commodities, mentioning the net quantity of the commodity contained within the package, declaring the country of origin for imported packages, and indicating the MRP, which must be inclusive of all taxes.
The department revealed that 516 violations were recorded in the financial year 2024-25. Out of these, 364 violators opted to resolve their issues by paying a total compounding fee of Rs 1.93 crore.
Action is ongoing against the remaining cases, with either further compounding or court proceedings underway.
