Madurai: Police arrested a 27-year-old man for attacking a woman who begs for a living. The 80-year-old woman was attacked with a wooden log, which left her with injuries on her head. While she was rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital for treatment, a case was registered with South Gate police station.
The injured woman was identified as T Lingammal, 80, from Ambedkar Nagar from Villapuram Kanmoi area.
The incident took place at East Veli Street signal on Saturday. GRH police who received information from the hospital staff, alerted the South Gate police.
The accused was identified as B Sathish Raj, 27, from Keerathurai. Police said he used to be a water can supplier for the shops in the city and was presently jobless. He was arrested soon after the comlaint was registered on Sunday.
Inquiries revealed that the woman sought alms from him whenever he crossed the signal. While he was already depressed over not getting a job, the woman’s begging irked him and he attacked her.
While Sathish Raj escaped from the spot after the attack, police who conducted an investigation arrested him under the sections IPC – 324- voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapon and 506 (ii) - criminal intimidation.
