Ex-minister B Subbayya Shetty passes away
Mangaluru: Former education minister Bakrabial Subbayya Shetty passed away at his residence in Bengaluru on Monday. He was 90.
Shetty won the assembly elections from Surathkal in 1972 and 1978. He served in various ministerial roles, including land reforms, information, and education portfolios in the D Devaraj Urs cabinet. Throughout his lifetime, he remained engaged in both political activities and societal matters.
He joined the Intelligence Bureau and was posted in Kashmir and Ladakh and also was a member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police force. He came back to Mangaluru after the birth of his first daughter and established a law practice. He then took interest in social issues and joined the Congress party. He was conferred many honours including the D Devraj Urs Award, Shantaveri Gopala Gowda Award, and most recently the Dr Da Ra Bendre Award.
He married Shalini Shetty in May 1963. He leaves behind his wife, two daughters, Dr Uma Savanoor and Dr Reshma Savanoor, and three granddaughters.
Former chief minister M Veerappa Moily, expressing his condolence, said Subbayya Shetty was actively involved in the preparation of the revolutionary land reforms of D Devaraj Urs. "He worked honestly for the implementation of land reforms in Dakshina Kannada and across the state. We worked together to ensure lakhs of tenants get their rights over land. Shetty's ideologies, social concerns, and his commitment to the Congress party were commendable," Moily stated.
