MANGALORE: Security has been beefed up in Bajpe and Ullal police station limits of Mangalore City Police which witnessed two assaults - on an auto rickshaw driver at Gurupura-Kaikamba under Bajpe PS, and the second on a rowdy sheeter - in Ullal police station in a span of eight hours on Sunday.
Platoon each of KSRP has been stationed in these places.
Patrolling supervised by senior police officials has been stepped up to prevent any untoward incident.
City police Chief Seemanth Kumar Singh said three teams each have been set up to work on these two cases and bring culprits to book at the earliest.
Noting that Ravi, the auto rickshaw driver who was assaulted by a group of miscreants near Gurupura-Kaikamba and undergoing treatment at a private hospital here, was out of danger, Seemanth said situation in and around Gurupura, which witnessed tension after the incident, was normal on Monday.
Referring to the fatal assault on
Sandeep Shetty (30), a rowdy-sheeter at his Someshwara residence under Ullal PS limits late on Sunday, Seemanth said Sandeep was an accused in five different cases, including one of murder. Sandeep said to be an associate of underworld don Bannanje Raja was believed to be lying low for some time now and was not involved in any anti-social activities. The reason for his murder is being ascertained, he said.
Police have already rounded up suspects in connection with the two cases for questioning, Seemanth said without specifying the numbers of those brought in for the purpose.
"We may also go in for preventive arrests to take care of those involved in rumour mongering and habitual trouble makers," he said, adding there are no immediate plans to impose prohibitory orders.
"We will review the situation and take that step if need for it arises," he added.
In addition, security has been tightened in all areas under Ullal police station limits which have been witnessing sporadic cases of arson. Admitting that this was a matter of concern for the city police, given that Ullal is communally sensitive, Seemanth said strict action would be taken against those involved. While a book shop was targeted at Thokkotu late on Saturday, miscreants last week had attempted to burn down office of a Hindu organisation.
