MUMBAI: It is not quite time but Mumbaikars may just have to bring out the brollies. A light drizzle caught the city unawares on Sunday night, bringing down the temperature even further. And the weather bureau expects the unseasonal showers to continue for the next few days, heralded by cloudy skies.
"The rain is linked to the cold. A wet wave is currently sweeping through parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir," said a senior weather official.
"Mumbai will definitely get chilly winds with the temperature falling three to four degrees below normal as northerly cold winds are likely to sweep parts of northern Maharashtra," he added.
On Sunday, the amount of rainfall recorded was 0.3 mm. Moisture-laden winds driving in from as far as Iraq flowing across north-western India were bringing in unexpected rain, officials said. Parts in interior Maharashtra shall also have rainfall over the next 24 hours.
Incidentally, January rains are not too rare in the city. According to the Met department, mild rains have hit the city almost every January for the last 50 years. While the showers usually lasted for only half a day and were a mere 0.5 mm, Colaba saw a deluge in the January of 1926 when a downpour of 75.9 mm was recorded on January 4.
