Mumbai’s first underground metro tunnel breakthrough achieved on Line 7A (photos)

MMRDA completed the 1.647-km tunnel from Andheri East to CSMIA, marking its first underground metro breakthrough in Mumbai.

The line will allow interchanges with Metro Lines 1, 6, and 9 for better connectivity across the city.

The tunnel was bored using a dual-mode TBM built for hard rock, creating a 6.35-metre-wide underground route.

Work began in Sept 2023 and continued smoothly despite tough conditions like steep gradients and shallow clearance.

Line 7A will offer a direct metro link from Andheri East to CSMIA Terminal 2, easing airport travel.

CM Devendra Fadnavis Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, and other senior IAS officers were present to mark the milestone.

59% of the project is complete, with coordinated efforts from MMRDA, BMC, AAI, and other agencies.
