PUNE: Exhibiting strong will, Vikram Pardeshi (44) on Wednesday showed up at a polling booth to vote, with his right arm and leg bandaged and plastered because of the injuries he suffered while saving a man falling from a height of about 40 feet on Oct 3.
Pardeshi arrived at the Vasudev Balwant Phadke School in an autorickshaw in the Pune Cantonment constituency. He was brought inside the booth in a wheelchair. But as the ramp was uneven, he got up and limped on one foot to enter the booth. "Nothing can stop me from voting as it is my fundamental right. If I don't vote, I shouldn't be expecting any change and shouldn't complain," he told TOI.
Pardeshi from the Tatya Tope housing society in Wanowrie was on his way to work on Oct 3 when he suddenly spotted a man dangling from the balcony of a building. Being a member of the Rashtriya Life Saving Society, he knew all kinds of life-saving skills. "My instincts rushed in, and I ran to save him. I was pulling him up, but then the railing broke, and even though I managed to pull him up, I fell down and badly hurt myself," he said.
The Rashtriya Life Saving Society provides long-term scholarships to boys and girls from urban areas to learn life-saving skills of different kinds besides other activities.
"I have multiple fractures resulting in five surgeries till now. Doctors told me that I need to rest completely, but I had to come out today to vote. I just couldn't skip voting. If I don't vote, I believe nothing will ever change," Pardeshi said.
