PUNE: Lavani and folk singer Yamunabai Waikar, poet-actor Kishor Kadam and anti-globalisation activist Sanjeev Sane have been selected for the Nilu Phule Sanman award, instituted in memory of the late actor Nilu Phule.
The felicitation, to be held on April 4 at the Ravindra Natyamandir in Mumbai, will mark the 79th birth anniversary of the actor. Journalist Kumar Ketkar, actors Mohan Agashe and Ashok Saraf will present the awards, comprising a memento and Rs 10,000.
Addressing a news conference here on Saturday, Gargi Phule, daughter of the actor said, "My father, Nilubhau, was not only an actor but an active social worker who was closely associated with socialist organisations.
Hence, the family has decided to felicitate activists and artists who have served society in various ways."
An eight-minute documentary on Phule, made by Nishith Dadhich, will also be screened during the function. The documentary is on Phule's life, both professional and personal. "After its first screening at the function, it will be uploaded on social networking video-sharing sites (YouTube)," said Omkar Thatte, Phule's son-in-law.
