NEW DELHI: BJP's Dr. Bharat Bhushan won from the Kathua assembly constituency securing 45,944 votes. He defeated BSP's Sandeep Majotra by a margin of 12,177 votes, who secured 33,827 in the Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections.
Kathua district witnessed a voter turnout of approximately 73.34% in the third and final phase of assembly elections on October 1.
Counting of votes began on Tuesday morning for 90 Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, the final lap of an electoral exercise that will give the union territory its first elected government since 2019 when Article 370 was abrogated. These are also the first assembly elections in J-K since 2014.
The National Conference-Congress alliance is likely to form government in Jammu and Kashmir with poll trends on Tuesday showing the combine ahead in 51 of the 90 seats while the BJP was leading in 26.
Trends uploaded by the Election Commission showed that the
PDP was ahead in five seats in the Union territory while the Independents are leading on seven seats.
The National Conference was leading in 41 while its ally
Congress was ahead in 10 seats, the trends showed.
Constituency detailsKathua (SC), a district situated in the Jammu division of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, is one of the 90 constituencies that constitute the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly. Moreover, Kathua falls under the jurisdiction of the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency.
The town, which serves as the administrative center of the Kathua district, is segmented into 27 wards and is located along National Highway 44 (NH-44).
The district is composed of six Assembly Constituencies (ACs) of Bani, Billawar, Basohli, Jasrota, Kathua and Hiranagar with a total of 5,06,679 electorate, among which 2,65,420 are male voters, 2,41,256 are female and 3 are third gender.
Voter turnoutThe Assembly elections in the Valley of Jammu and Kashmir saw an overall voter turnout of 63.88%, with 64.88% of male voters and 63.04% of female voters casting their ballots.
According to the Election Commission, the third phase, conducted on October 1, had a voter turnout of 69.69%. The polling percentages for the first and second phases were 61.38% and 57.31%, respectively. Interestingly, the female voter turnout in Phase 3 was slightly higher at 70.02%, compared to the male turnout of 69.37%.
