Newborn rescued within hours after abduction from hospital
Surat: Police arrested a 32-year-old woman on Saturday for allegedly kidnapping a newborn baby boy from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of New Civil Hospital (NCH). Police rescued the child within 10 hours, allowing his treatment to resume.
Preliminary police investigation revealed that the woman was under stress due to a miscarriage some time back. After kidnapping the boy, she fed the child and later gave him to a household in a neighbouring lane of her residence in Dindoli.
Police arrested Radha Jha for allegedly kidnapping the child and detained her husband, Raju, for questioning. Police said that detailed questioning and investigation will reveal details related to the case.
During investigation, a woman security guard at the hospital identified Jha from the CCTV footage. Jha worked at NCH for a month as a security guard. A copy of her Aadhaar card was found in the records of NCH, and based on it, her address was traced.
She changed her residence, but police found her current address from a phone number of a person with whom she frequently talked.
"When police nabbed her, she was at her home in Dindoli area. She had given the child to a known person living in a neighbouring home, and we are investigating why they accepted the child," said a police officer.
The kidnapped child is the first child of his parents. The child's aunt was at the NICU, but Jha kidnapped the child when she (the aunt) was busy with some work. Soon, the aunt raised an alarm that the child was missing. Security personnel at NCH could not know when Jha left the hospital with the child.
"The child was under treatment due to low weight, and within an hour of his birth, he was kidnapped. He was kept in an incubator due to his poor health, and later the woman kept moving with him for a few hours, which posed a threat to the child's health," said a police officer.
After his rescue, the child was brought back to the hospital, and his condition is said to be stable now.
