Dist officials inspect Anganwadis in Pudukottai
Pudukkottai: Following complaints about poor maintenance and inadequate infrastructure, officials conducted inspections at several Anganwadi centres in the Ponnamaravathi area of Pudukkottai district.
Concerns have been mounting over the lack of space and unsafe structures at some centres. At the Melasivapuri Anganwadi, where 22 children are enrolled, residents flagged the use of asbestos sheets for roofing, citing extreme heat and health risks.
"Children are suffering from excessive heat and sweating inside the asbestos-roofed building. If this continues, there's a real risk of heat-related illnesses. There are unused buildings nearby where the centre could be shifted," said resident S Vani.
As part of the ‘Ungalai Thedi Ungal Ooril' initiative, district officials, including the RDO, inspected the Melasivapuri centre and another in Chithur, which falls under the same block. Officials told TOI that grievances were being addressed and a suitable solution would be implemented soon.
In addition, the team inspected schools to assess the quality of food served under the chief minister's breakfast scheme, checked student health metrics, and reviewed welfare support for mothers undergoing mental health treatment in maternity wards at Primary Health Centres (PHCs).
