Brijesh’s wife holds Varanasi fort intact

Varanasi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to end the monopoly of jailed mafia don Brijesh Singh’s family on the prestigious Varanasi constituency of MLC (local bodies) election as his wife and Independent candidate Annapurna Singh won this seat.
At Varanasi constituency, which houses PM Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency apart from Chandauli and Bhadohi districts, BJP candidate Dr Sudama Patel could secure only 170 votes and was at third position while SP’s Umesh Yadav stood second with 345 votes.According to district election officer Kaushal Raj Sharma, of 4,949 as many as 4,876 voters exercised their franchise in this election. Annapurna was elected with 4,234 votes while 127 votes were found invalid.
With her win, Annapurna maintained the monopoly her family has been maintaining on Varanasi seat since 1998.
