Varanasi: Family members of 14 jailed accused in the case of alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old girl by 23 men between Mar 29 and Apr 4 submitted a memorandum at
PM Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency office on Tuesday, demanding justice.
The friend of the girl, with whom the latter claimed to have stayed at her home in those seven days, also appeared with protestors and said one of the accused, Raj Vishwakarma was her brother and claimed the charges leveled were false.
Police commissioner Mohit Agrawal had on Apr 17 formed a special investigation team when families of the arrested accused met him with a demand for justice and submitted some evidence. On Tuesday, they marched to Modi's constituency office in Jawahar Nagar. Initially, a heavy police force deployed there stopped them but later allowed them to go to the office where ACP Bhelupur received the memorandum.
This gang rape case was lodged by the girl's family on Apr 5, alleging she was drugged and raped by 23 men over seven days. Police lodged FIR against 23 men, including 12 identified. A total of 14 accused were arrested by Wednesday. During medical examination, the survivor was diagnosed with hepatitis B. During his visit to Varanasi on Apr 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sought details from police of action taken in the case.
