13 BHU students held for attempting to burn Manusmriti, clashing with staff

Lanka police detained 13 Banaras Hindu University students for attempting to burn Manusmriti and clashing with proctorial staff on December 25. The students were charged with various offenses, including assault on security personnel and promoting enmity. Two female security officers were seriously injured, leading to the students' arrest and subsequent police custody.

VARANASI: Lanka police took 13 Banaras Hindu University (BHU) students into custody on Dec 25 for attempting to burn Manusmriti on the campus and clashing with proctorial staff.
The detained students were booked under BHS sections 132 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 121(2) (causing grievous hurt to a public servant), 196(1) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 190 (unlawful assembly for any offence committed by the group), 191(2) (rioting), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt to another person), 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide).
According to Lanka police, on Dec 25, a complaint was received that some students were creating a ruckus at the Arts Faculty intersection within the campus with an intention to burn the Manusmriti and incite religious tension.
Despite security's efforts to control the situation, the students engaged in assaulting security personnel, vandalism, and obstructing govt work.
Two female security officers were seriously injured in the scuffle and are hospitalised. The university security personnel handed over 13 students to the police.
Lanka SHO Shivanat Mishra said that the arrested students included Mukesh Kumar, Sandeep Jaiswar, Amar Sharma, Arvind Pal, Anupam Kumar, Laxman Kumar, Avinash, Arvind, Shubham Kumar, Adarsh, Ipsita Agarwal, Siddhi Tiwari, and Katyayani B. Reddy.
