NEW DELHI: India recorded a spike of 752 coronavirus infections in 24-hour period, the highest since May 21, according to Union health ministry data released on Saturday.
India's active Covid-19 caseload surpassed 3,000 on Saturday, reaching 3,420.
With four more deaths reported in a 24-hour period, two from Kerala and one each from Rajasthan and Karnataka, the total death toll was recorded at 5,33,332.
The number of current Covid-19 cases increased in 17 states, according to ministry data updated at 8 am on Saturday. Kerala (266), Gujarat (12), Tamil Nadu (13) and Karnataka (70) were among the states that were affected.
According to the health ministry's website, total number of 4,44,71,212 people have recovered from the illness so far, meaning that the country's recovery rate is 98.81 percent. The current fatality rate is 1.19 percent.
The government has advised people not to panic and stated that the recent increase in Covid-19 instances is not reason for alarm. As a precaution, the Center has suggested that individuals with comorbidities use face masks.
On Wednesday, Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya examined the readiness of healthcare facilities nationwide and emphasized the need to remain vigilant against newly emerging Covid strains.
As of 21 December, 22 cases of the Covid sub-variant JN.1 were reported nationwide, according to government sources. Of them, one each in Kerala and Maharashtra and nineteen in Goa have been located. The officials had not yet released the details of one case.
JN.1, an Omicron lineage descendant, is categorized by the World Health Organization as a "variant of interest."
