Usha Chilukuri Vance is an American lawyer and wife of JD Vance, Ohio's junior U.S. Senator and vice president-elect. She will be the first Indian American, Telugu American, and Hindu American to serve as Second Lady, starting January 20, 2025.

Usha Chilukuri was born in a San Diego suburb, California, to Telugu-speaking Indian immigrants. She hails from Vadluru, a village in Andhra Pradesh, India. Her family emigrated abroad more than 50 years ago.

Usha Vance completed her high school education at Mt. Carmel High School in 2003, where she was an active member of the marching band.

Usha Vance earned a bachelor’s degree in History from Yale University, where she was actively involved in extracurriculars for four years, before pursuing a Master of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge as a Gates Fellow.

Usha Vance clerked for Supreme Court Justices John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh. She also served as Managing Editor of the Yale Journal on Law & Technology and Executive Development Editor of The Yale Law Journal.

In 2013, Vance earned her Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School, where she held the positions of executive development editor for the Yale Law Journal and managing editor for the Yale Journal of Law & Technology.

Usha Vance and JD Vance first crossed paths at Yale Law School, where JD had been awarded a scholarship. The couple tied the knot in Kentucky in 2014, followed by a second ceremony officiated by a Hindu priest.

At the July 2024 Republican National Convention, Usha Vance delivered the opening speech for her husband, JD Vance, in his vice-presidential campaign. Since then, she has served as his advisor, attending campaign events and occasionally joining him on stage.
