Anime fans and collectors can rejoice — Studio Ghibli’s Grave of the Fireflies is making a comeback on home video. The 1988 anime classic Grave of the Fireflies is getting a brand-new Blu-ray and SteelBook release this July. This marks the return of one of Studio Ghibli’s most emotional films, which had been out of print for years.
GKIDS and Shout! Studios have announced that the film will be released on July 8 in both a standard Blu-ray edition and a Limited Edition SteelBook. Pre-orders are now open through the GKIDS and Shout Factory websites, as well as major retailers like Walmart and Barnes & Noble.
Grave of the Fireflies Blu-ray: A new chance to own a beloved classic
Grave of the Fireflies is a powerful World War II drama directed by Isao Takahata, co-founder of Studio Ghibli. The film tells the heart-wrenching story of 14-year-old Seita and his little sister Setsuko, who struggle to survive after losing their home and family during the war. The movie is based on a real-life story by Nosaka Akiyuki and is widely considered one of the most emotional and important animated films ever made.
The new Limited Edition SteelBook comes with a fresh cover design and includes both Blu-ray and DVD discs. It also offers special features like interviews with director Takahata and film critic Roger Ebert, deleted scenes, storyboards, trailers, and more. At a list price of $25, it's much more affordable than older out-of-print SteelBooks, which had been selling for hundreds of dollars online.
Fans will have a chance to see the film on the big screen again. "Grave of the Fireflies" will be part of Studio Ghibli Fest 2025. It will screen from August 10 to 12 in select theatres, alongside other Ghibli favourites like "My Neighbor Totoro," "Spirited Away," and "The Boy and the Heron."
This rerelease is a great chance for longtime fans and newcomers to watch one of Ghibli’s most unforgettable films, whether at home or in cinemas.
