‘Courage the Cowardly Dog’ head writer, David Steve Cohen passes away at 58

David Steve Cohen, one of the leading writers of the cartoon series ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog,’ passed away at the age of 58 due to cancer. The head writer was responsible for creating memorable yet unsettling episodes of the pink-colored dog that had the audience fascinated over the years.
The American animation historian Jerry Beck shared a heartfelt condolence note on Facebook, dedicated to the late writer’s prowess over the years. Beck stated, “R.I.P.😞 David Steven Cohen - I just heard that my friend has passed from cancer. He was an accomplished writer, composer, producer – animation lover and friend.”
Mentioning the accomplishments of Cohen, Beck expressed how he had been essential in live-action comedy series such as ‘Pee-Wee's Playhouse,’ ‘Alf,’ ‘Parker Lewis Can't Lose,’ and more. Additionally, Cohen also contributed to the success of the animated series, ‘Alf Tales,’ and ‘Courage the Cowardly Dog’ with gripping comedic storytelling, and a feature film ‘Balto.’ Beck concluded with a poignant note, “What a great guy. A true friend to all. You did good, David. You won't be forgotten.”

According to the Express Tribune, Cohen's prominent episodes include 'Klub Katz,' '1000 Years of Courage,' 'Forbidden Hat of Gold,' and 'The Sand Whale Strikes.' The show was created by John R. Dilworth, and the late writer joined the team in the first season. However, with impeccable skills, Cohen became the head writer for the later seasons of 2, 3, and 4.
Many of the cartoon series’ fans shared their condolences on social media, thanking Cohen for his contributions to creating a memorable childhood. “Thank you, David Steven Cohen, for creating my childhood show and getting me into horror films,” one fan wrote on X.
Other than the aforementioned work, David made a significant contribution to the children’s television shows, ‘The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss,’ and ‘Phil of the Future.’
