Reese Witherspoon recently opened up about a long-lost friendship with a well known British actress, revealing that the star no longer speaks to her. While she didn’t drop names, fan think that all fingers point at Kate Winslet.
During a recent interview with her 'You’re Cordially Invited' co-star Will Ferrell, Reese reflected on a public speech she once gave that, in hindsight, she deeply regrets. She recounted a moment that continues to haunt her years later, explaining that she had been invited to present an award to a friend an accomplished and “serious, proper actress.”
However, misjudging the tone of the event, she decided to take a comedic approach. “I assumed it was more of a roast. So I got up there and roasted her,” she said in a report on Daily Mail.
Unfortunately, the humour didn’t land as expected and Reese admitted that the blunder effectively ended their friendship. “We’re not friends anymore,” she stated bluntly. “I don’t think she likes me anymore. I thought it was hilarious at the time, but I had completely misread the audience. It was a disaster.”
Though Reese didn’t explicitly name the actress, online detective work points to Kate as the former friend in question. A speech transcript from 2007 reveals that Reese honoured Kate at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards that year.
In her speech, the actress humorously described their first meeting saying, “Kate Winslet moved into my neighborhood and rang my doorbell. She said, ‘Dahling, Sam is off shooting, our kids are the same age should they have a playdate? Oh, and by the way, it’s almost 9 o’clock and I’ve had nothing to drink. Do you have any wine?’”
She also joked about Kate’s boldness as an actress, referencing Iris: “When I saw her jump into that freezing lake, completely naked, I thought, ‘Wow, that must be really cold.’ And then, ‘Wow, that’s an actor without fear.’”
The speech also alluded to their past antics, teasing, “I could tell you personal stories, but they’re all too wild, scandalous, or wine-fueled to share.” The archived transcript specifically noted that Reese mentioned discussions about laser hair removal an oddly specific detail that links back to her recent interview.
