Gerard Butler is to star in 'The Bricklayer'. The 'Rocknrolla' actor will play a retired FBI agent named Steve Vail who is working on a building site in Chicago when he is called back into duty after a gang of criminals "demand an escalating series of multi-million dollar ransom payments".
'Beautiful and the Damned' writer Hanna Weg is adapting the screenplay from Noah Boyd's novel, though no director has been hired by Millennium Films.
The female lead of Vail's partner, the deputy director at the FBI, has not yet been cast.
Gerard's character appears in two sequels by the original author, 'Last Chance To Die' and 'Agent X', so there is a possibility the movie could become a franchise.
The Scottish star can next be seen appearing in 'Coriolanus' and 'Machine Gun Preacher'.
He was also recently linked with a role in a movie version of 1970s British action crime series 'The Professionals', along with Liam Neeson, Jason Statham and Gary Oldman.
Film company Lionsgate acquired the rights to the series - which ran for five seasons from 1978 to 1983 - and hopes to make a Hollywood-style movie with 'Casino Royale' and 'Quantum of Solace' executive producer Callum McDougall on board.
Set in the modern day, it will tell the story of how the detectives are brought together again by C15 boss Cowley.
