The world premiere of Lord of the Orphans at Nandan II on Sunday evening was delayed by an hour, but movie lovers kept waiting patiently for a dekko at the film by celebrated cinematographer Ranjan Palit, known for movies like

and the recent Pataakha. Ranjan, who turned into a one-man army for his film, explained why he juggled multiple roles for his autographical movie on the Palit family of the Bajra (Chandernagore).

“I was in charge of the story, script, camera, light, sound, focus, production design and direction. I was also the spot boy as I sometimes fetched tea for my crew. I couldn’t afford to hire extra hands. When I plan my next film, things will hopefully be a lot better,” he said.

Lord of the Orphans spans five generations of the Palit family, beginning with Ranjan’s great-grandmother, Mahamaya Palit, and ending with his daughter, Tara Palit, after whom the family lineage will cease to exist. While some of the cast members were present, a few others like Malavika Mohanan, Adil Hussain and Kamalika Banerjee could not make it to the screening because of their work commitments. “I am overwhelmed by the response,” said Ranjan after the screening.
