Renowned filmmaker
Anurag Kashyap has publicly apologized after facing widespread backlash over his controversial remarks about the Brahmin community. The Gangs of Wasseypur director took to Instagram on Tuesday to issue a heartfelt note, admitting he crossed the line in anger and assuring he would be more mindful of his words in the future.
“I forgot my limits while replying to someone in anger.” In a message written in Hindi, Kashyap acknowledged that his angry response to online criticism led to unintended hurt. “I forgot my limits while replying to someone in anger,” he wrote. “Bad-mouthing an entire community that includes people who have stood by me throughout my life was wrong. My family is hurt. Many intellectuals I respect are hurt. I sincerely apologize.”
Kashyap added that the comment was made in a moment of rage and did not reflect his actual thoughts. He assured his followers that he would work on his temper and be more responsible with his words going forward.

In a fit of anger while replying to someone, I forgot my limits and ended up bad-mouthing the entire Brahmin community — a community whose many members have been a part of my life, are still present, and have contributed a lot. Today, all of them are hurt by me. My family is hurt. Many intellectuals whom I deeply respect are hurt by the way I spoke in anger.
By saying such things, I myself diverted the conversation away from the actual issue. I sincerely apologize to the community — I never intended to say those things to them, but in my rage, while responding to a vile comment, I ended up writing it.
I apologize to all my fellow colleagues, to my family, and to the community for my way of speaking and for using abusive language. Going forward, I will work on myself to ensure such a thing doesn’t happen again. I will work on my anger. And if I have to speak on any issue, I will use the right words. I hope you will forgive me.”
What’s the controversy? The controversy stemmed from Anurag Kashyap’s response to criticism over his upcoming project, ‘Phule,’ a biopic on social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule. His comment, interpreted by many as casteist, quickly escalated into a social media storm.
Following the issues, Anurag Kashyap and his family, including daughter Aaliyah, reportedly received rape and death threats from trolls online. Legal trouble also followed, as an FIR was filed against the filmmaker in Jaipur over his use of abusive language toward the Brahmin community.
