Irrfan Khan on why he accepted a gay role, international recognition, and Angelina Jolie...

doweshowbellyad=0; Irrfan Khan. (TOI Photo) Everyone’s wondering how Irrfan Khan, one of the top actors today with international acclaim and fame, could agree to play a gay in Mira Nair’s Migration. “I felt, why shouldn’t I do it? There was no reason to say a no to it,” he says.
Most actors in Bollywood would shy away from playing a homosexual mainly because our society is yet to open up to it.But Irrfan believes that society is changing, and cinema too is going through a rapid change.
The man from Jaipur, who came to Mumbai in the early 90s after passing out from the National School of Drama (NSD), is now gearing up for the Spirit Awards next month. The Awards are seen as a precursor to the Oscar ceremony in Los Angeles. Irrfan will be rubbing shoulders in the Best Supporting Actor category with stalwarts of international cinema like Marcus Carl Franklin, Kene Holliday and Steve Zahn for his performance in Mira Nair’s The Namesake.
Incidentally, Irrfan was in two minds about taking up this role as he had some other assignments at the time. “Also, when I read the novel, there wasn’t much in it for this character. But I was very impressed with the adaptation. There were some lines in the film which I thought I’d never get to deliver again. Besides, it was Mira’s film.”

Has he planned on what he’s going to wear at the Spirit Awards? “Not really. I’ll start thinking about those things just two days earlier. I’ll just wear something I like unless, of course, my agent or manager guides me to wear something else,” says a visibly excited Irrfan, who is also celebrating his birthday today.
There’s lots he’s looking forward to this year. Three of his films — Crazy 4, Mumbai Meri Jaan and Sunday are ready for release. “In Sunday, I play a struggling actor who is a bad actor, but he thinks he’s good! He’s very confident and goes in full attire for every audition! In Crazy 4, I play a mentally-challenged man who’s obsessed with cleanliness. Mumbai Meri Jaan is a movie on the people of Mumbai from different strata, how a bomb blast affects their lives.” Clearly, there’s a change in the profile of the actor who mostly played negative characters. “Today there are no regular heroes or villains. I’d be foolish to get slotted.”
While on films and people, Irrfan is in touch with the sexiest woman in the world, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt post A Mighty Heart? “I’m not the kind to be on SMS trying to maintain contact. I’d rather try and meet up with people. About being in touch with Angelina and Brad Pitt, yes we are in touch.”
