Singer Stebin Ben says that like many other aspiring singers, he came to Mumbai with an intent to sing for Bollywood films, thinking he can gain success only if he sings for Bollywood heroes in films. But now, his perception has changed, thanks to his recent hit numbers Thoda Thoda Pyaar and Baarish Ban Jaana - both being independents numbers. "When I started my career in music and came to Mumbai, I believed in Bollywood music and wanted to sing only for Hindi films.
But in recent times, things have changed and independent music has made a comeback of sorts. And the coronavirus-led lockdown triggered a massive increase in a lot of indie labels releasing their songs on digital platforms. This has helped a lot of musicians make money during the lockdown which is a great thing. My recent two songs - Thoda Thoda Pyaar and Baarish Ban Jaana - both were independent numbers and I was amazed to see the reaction and love I got from the people towards those songs. This made me change my perception that it's only when you sing for Bollywood, you become successful. Though I feel every singer aspires to sing for Hindi films and wants to hear their voice in the theatres but that takes time. One shouldn't restrict himself/herself only to Bollywood, at least in the current times," says Stebin in an interaction with us.
So is he enjoying this newfound success? "Everything has happened all of sudden. People have recently started talking about me. It is a surreal feeling. All this motivates me to work even harder and be consistent in my work. I aim to release one song every month," he says.
Stebin was recently in Jaipur to perform at a wedding. "It was my second visit to the city and the experience was fabulous. While the guests at the wedding were around 50 only following the Covid-19 guidelines but that didn't stop me from giving my best. Also, I feel it is better to perform for 50 people instead of just sitting at home," he says.
