When director
Abdul Majith wanted to do a film on sex workers, not many actresses were willing to be a part of it. But Abdul says that he would be showcasing another side of the lives of sex workers in his upcoming film, Torchlight.
He says, “We have heard many stories about sex workers and how they stand on the highways. Instead of doing a story on it, I am delving into the lives of these people and focus on what pushes them to this profession.
I met a few sex workers, heard their stories and perfected my script accordingly. Their life is so different from ours and I felt the need to showcase it. Most women said that they are forced to do so to save their husbands, or provide education to their children, and not as a business to lead a lavish lifestyle. The film would be shot realistically, without exaggerating.”
Actress
Sadha and
Riythvika will be playing the role of sex workers. Newcomers Udhaya, Sivasakthi and
Dinesh will be playing pivotal roles, along with director-actor Venkatesh. Talking about how he roped in Sadha, Abdul says, “Many actresses didn’t want to take it up as it is a sensitive topic. But when I narrated the script to Sadha, she was keen on doing a challenging role like this. Some portions were risky, but she gave it her best. Riythvika, too, had done her part well. We want to create awareness and convey a message through this film.”
The post-production work is on in full swing and the team is planning to release the movie by December.
