As the country deals with law and order challenges, leadership remains a big question. Hasina, who was ousted last year in the wake of student-led protests, has remained a significant figure in the political landscape. Yet, while everyone debates her leadership, one aspect of her legacy is often overlooked– her education. How has her academic journey shaped her political vision and her approach to governing, especially in such uncertain times?

In this article, we take a deeper look at Sheikh Hasina’s educational background, exploring how her studies have influenced her political career. As Bangladesh goes through these challenges, looking at her education might give new insight into how she has handled politics for decades.
Early education in Tungipara and Dhaka

Sheikh Hasina’s journey in education started in her hometown, Tungipara, a small village in East Bengal. She attended primary school there, laying the foundation for her learning in a rural setting that would later shape her as a leader.

Her family’s move to Dhaka marked a turning point in her education. According to a report presented by News 18, in the capital, she joined Azimpur Girls’ School, where she continued her studies in a more structured and urban environment. Later, she enrolled at Begum Badrunnessa Girls’ College, an institution that played a notable role in shaping her academic experience during her foundational years.
Political engagement during college life
Hasina’s interest in politics grew during her time at Eden College in Dhaka. While focusing on her studies, she also became deeply involved in student leadership. According to the report, in 1966-67, she was elected Vice President of the Student Union at Eden College, gaining early leadership experience that would serve her well in the years to come.

Her political involvement didn’t stop there. As per report, she joined the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, and was later elected general secretary of the women’s unit in Rokeya Hall, a well-known student dormitory at Dhaka University. These early leadership roles gave Hasina firsthand experience in politics and governance, setting the stage for her future in national leadership.
University education at Dhaka University
After Eden College, Hasina continued her studies at Dhaka University, one of the country’s most prestigious institutions. Media reports suggest that she graduated in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in Bengali literature, a subject that connected her deeply with Bangladesh’s cultural roots and heritage.
