Uttarkashi’s Manikarnika Ghat recently witnessed a heartbreaking moment when a woman drowned in the Ganga River while trying to pose for a photo or social media reel. The video, which was reportedly captured by her sister, shows her stepping too close to the edge before slipping into the fast-moving current. Despite immediate attempts to rescue her, she could not be saved. Authorities are still working to recover her body. Her identity remains unknown, but her story serves as a grim cautionary tale.
Shweta Survase, a 23-year-old from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar in Maharashtra, tragically lost her life on June 17, 2024. While filming a reel near Dutt Dham Temple, she accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake. Her Toyota Etios reversed rapidly and fell 300 feet into a gorge. The horrifying moment was caught on camera and later went viral. Shweta’s death shook her community and alo made people aware about the serious risks of mixing driving with content creation.
Ashutosh Sahu, a 20-year-old BCA student from Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, died in March 2023 while filming a reel with friends. In search of an outstanding backdrop, he climbed onto the sun shade of an old building. As his friends encouraged him, he jumped on the fragile structure, which collapsed under his weight. A chilling video also captured his fall. The tragedy showed how peer pressure and social media validation can lead young people into life-threatening situations.
On April 18, 2024, 21-year-old Shivam Kumar from Khairada village in Uttar Pradesh attempted a risky stunt for an Instagram reel. He climbed onto a school rooftop and tried to hang upside down from a flagpole, trying to raise a flag. The pole however, was not designed to bear such weight and unfortunately he snapped and collapsed.
A reel shoot took a deadly turn for 22-year-old Yashwant Nagar in Kota, Rajasthan, on May 1, 2024. While filming a video, he was accidentally shot in the chest by a friend. Despite being rushed to New Medical College Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Yashwant was a humanities student, and was known to be passionate about content creation. His untimely death warned about the grim consequences of using weapons or props during social media shoots.
