NEW DELHI: What appeared to be a waveless Delhi election turned out to be a saffron tsunami Saturday morning as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) added 40 seats to its previous tally, winning a total of 48 seats in the 70-member assembly.

Riding high on the anti-incumbency, the BJP not only pierced through the fortress of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) but also trounced its chief Arvind Kejriwal in a high-stake battle.

Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, son of ex-Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma, trounced Kejriwal by over 4,000 votes in the New Delhi assembly seat and emerged as a "giant slayer" in the capital polls.

Kejriwal's route could be attributed to the BJP's astute political move to deny a ticket to Parvesh Verma during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and fielding him against the AAP chief in the assembly battle.

Verma's victory is apparently a historic achievement as the BJP, with no CM face to crop up against Kejriwal, had counted on the former MP.

Meanwhile, Verma has passed the baton to the party high command to decide on who would lead the Delhi government as the chief minister.

"In our party, the legislative party decides (CM's face) and then the party leadership approves it. So the party's decision will be acceptable to everyone," Parvesh Verma told news agency ANI.

The man of the moment said the BJP's priority will be to deliver on poll promises by giving Rs 2,500 to women, creating SIT to investigate corruption, Yamuna riverfront and reducing pollution and traffic congestion.

"We will build such a capital that everyone will be proud of," said Verma.

The BJP leader credited PM Modi and the workers of the BJP for his precedent-breaking victory.

Kejriwal, meanwhile, addressed his party workers and the people of Delhi, announcing that AAP would now take on the role of a constructive opposition.

"We accept the mandate of the people with great humility. I congratulate the BJP for this victory, and I hope they will fulfill all the promises for which people have voted them," Kejriwal said, acknowledging the BJP’s victory.
