Examining EC’s voters’ list proposal: Govt

NEW DELHI: Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday said the government was considering the Election Commission’s proposal to link the electoral roll with Aadhaar to avoid multiple enrolment.
However, he said this would require amendments to electoral laws. He informed Parliament that the EC has taken measures for “security and safety of the electoral roll data” platform.
Electoral roll database system does not enter into the Aadhaar ecosystem and the system is used only for authentication purpose, the minister said.Keeping a gap between the two systems effectively prevented theft interception and highjacking of the voter system, he added.
