Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Canada's prime minister Mark Carney as he registers victory in the national elections, the result of which was declared Tuesday.
Writing on his official X account, Prime Minister Modi said, "Congratulations Mark J Carney on your election as the prime minister of Canada and to the Liberal Party on their victory. India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people.

Ties between Canada and India became strained after Canada accused New Delhi of involvement in the killing of Canadian Sikh Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a well-known supporter of the Khalistan movement—an allegation India has strongly denied.

Do you think the relationship between India and Canada will improve under Prime Minister Mark Carney?

Carney has attempted to shift the country’s foreign policy tone by speaking in favour of restoring diplomatic ties. After the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Carney extended his condolences to the victims, signalling a possible change in approach.
During a recent media interaction in Calgary, Alberta, regarding US tariffs, Carney had said he intented to expand trade partnerships with like-minded nations, highlighting India as a key opportunity.
He said, “What Canada will be looking to do is to diversify our trading relationships with like-minded countries, and there are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India. There needs to be a shared sense of values around that commercial relationship, and if I am Prime Minister, I look forward to the opportunity to build that."
