Maharashtra polls: Latur district records 67.03% voting

The Latur district recorded a voter turnout of 67.03 per cent across its six assembly constituencies in the Maharashtra elections, officials said on Thursday.
At 69.92 per cent, the Latur Rural seat recorded the highest turnout in the district during the elections on Wednesday, while Latur City saw 62.74 per cent voting, the lowest among the six constituencies.

The turnout figures in the other constituencies are: Ahmadpur at 68.71 per cent, Udgir (67.11 per cent), Nilanga (65.75 per cent) and 68.88 per cent in Ausa.

To attract voters, innovative booths were set up across the districts, promoting tree plantation, bamboo cultivation, wildlife conservation, and environmental awareness, officials said.

Elections to the 288-member state legislative assembly were held on Wednesday. As per the provisional figures provided by the Election Commission, an estimated 65 per cent of voting was recorded in the state.

He labeled the MVA as the "Maha Vasooli Aghadi," implying they were exploiting the public for their own gain. “There is no close competition. Mahayuti will form the government with a clear majority. MVA tried to misguide people and consider them foolish. Mahayuti is clear with their CM face,” Kadam said.

His statements came amid positive exit poll projections for the Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP. BJP Mahila Morcha National Vice President Medha Kulkarni also weighed in, praising the exit poll results and asserting that the government would be formed again by Mahayuti. “The exit poll is encouraging... Beneficiaries of Ladki Bahin Yojana have voted for the government... Mahayuti will form the government in the state again,” Kulkarni remarked.

On Wednesday, Maharashtra held elections for its 288 assembly seats in a single phase, and exit polls projected a significant lead for the Mahayuti alliance. The Republic TV-PMARQ exit poll forecasted Mahayuti winning 137-157 seats, while the MVA, which comprises Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (SP), was projected to secure 126-147 seats. Other smaller parties were predicted to win 2-8 seats. Other polls, including Matrize and Chanakya Strategies, also indicated a win for Mahayuti, with some projecting up to 175 seats for the alliance.

Maharashtra recorded a voter turnout of 58.22% by 5 pm on Wednesday. The elections were particularly significant, marking the first assembly poll in the state after splits in both Shiv Sena and NCP. In the 2019 assembly elections, the BJP won 105 seats, with Shiv Sena securing 56 and Congress 44.

Despite exit polls suggesting a potential shift in power to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Jharkhand, Congress leader Rakesh Sinha has expressed unwavering confidence in the victory of the INDIA alliance, asserting that the public has spoken in favor of the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance).

In an exclusive statement to ANI on Thursday, Sinha dismissed the significance of exit polls, emphasizing that governments are formed by the people, not by predictions. He said, “No exit poll forms anyone’s government. Governments are formed by people. The youth, farmers, and women have voted to form the Mahagathbandhan government.”

Sinha further highlighted the promises made by the alliance, including the Maiya Samman Yojana, loan waivers for farmers, and guarantees for employment and affordable gas cylinders. He insisted that these commitments resonated with voters, leading to the Mahagathbandhan securing public trust. "We don’t need to go by exit polls... We know the people of the state have ousted BJP-NDA," Sinha added.

Echoing similar sentiments, Congress leader Surendra Rajput also voiced confidence in the alliance’s victory, both in Jharkhand and Maharashtra. Speaking to ANI, Rajput remarked, "The exit polls were wrong in the Lok Sabha elections, and they’re wrong now. We are confident that the MVA government will be formed in Maharashtra, and we will repeat our success in Jharkhand."

In Jharkhand, where elections were held in two phases for 81 assembly seats, exit polls have varied predictions. Some suggest a win for the BJP-led alliance, while others believe the ruling JMM-led alliance may hold on to power. The BJP-led alliance includes the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), Janata Dal (United), and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), while the JMM-led alliance comprises Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist).

The second phase of polling concluded on Wednesday, with an approximate voter turnout of 67.59%. The results for all 81 constituencies will be declared on November 23, alongside those for Maharashtra Assembly elections and bypolls across several states.

Election officials confirmed that the disruption was short-lived. District collector and returning officer Jalaj Sharma stated, "The EVM in question did not stop working for a long time. There was some issue with its wire connection. A technician came and sorted out the issue. It did not last long. Voting resumed at the booth after the issue was resolved."

Rajesaheb Deshmukh, the NCP (SP) candidate from Parli, raised concerns about a disconnected CCTV camera at a Dharmapuri polling station. A video showed Deshmukh confronting polling staff about the disabled camera. He later alleged that minority communities faced obstruction from voting and claimed unauthorised persons were operating EVMs.

The voting process across all 288 assembly constituencies in Maharashtra commenced at 7 am with a scheduled conclusion at 6 pm.

"I appeal everyone to come out and cast their votes. This is their right and their duty," BJP leader Hema Malini said after casting her vote.

"It is very important to vote, otherwise we would be disappointed to have not done our bit for the country. With the votes, we can have our hope. The voting percentage has been increasing, I think it would be more than 65 pc this time for sure," Kapoor said.
