MUMBAI: When he was not immersed in composing songs, the late Naushad took time out to indulge in his other love - angling, or the sport of fishing with a rod and line. Members of the Maharashtra State Angling Association recalled how Naushad, who passed away in a city hospital on Friday, joined the body in 1959 and caught a 52-pound (about 24 kg) katla fish three years later.
"It took me nearly an hour to land this giant. It was one of the greatest thrills I have experienced," he was quoted as saying by an association official. When Naushad was younger, he used to fish at Powai Lake with lyricists Shakeel Badaiyuni and Majrooh Sultanpuri, the official said. Members of the association also remember Naushad for his love of the beauty of nature. "It is in the beautiful setting of Powai Lake with its trees, birds and butterflies that I have often got my inspiration for some of my best works," the official quoted Naushad as saying.
