Winter garden protection

As the chilly winter winds settle on the garden leaves, they leave them dry and wilting. The flowers wilt, the leaves turn brown, the frost destroys the soil, and so much more. So, if you have a backyard or home garden, here are 8 tips to protect it in winter.

Mulch the soil for warmth

All around the garden, spread a layer of mulch. In the base of the plants, near the roots, spread a layer of mulch and make it with tree bark, dried leaves, coconut shavings, and the likes.

Cover with burlap

Burlap is basically a jute cloth that can be used to cover the plants at night and during frost and chilly winters. Take a bamboo branch or a stick which is slightly taller than the plant’s length, add it in the ground, and cover the burlap over it.

Avoid overwatering

In the winter months, it is very important that you dont overwater the plants. As the absorption speed in the soil decreases, the excess water will lead to mold and rotting roots.

Cut off the dead ends

In winters, it is also important to cut off and prune away the dead ends in the plant. It could be a browning leaf, a rotting stem, or even a wilting flower. This simple cutting and pruning will make sure that the healthy stems and leaves receive the major nutrition.

Try to bring some plants indoors

If possible, bring some plants indoors. If there is a Pothos, or a Snake plant, or a Mint plant in the backyard, try bringing it inside to protect it from winter winds.

Lukewarm watering

While some people might find this odd, in winters, people do add lukewarm water to the plants. Boil water just till the point you can dip your finger in without it burning and add it slowly to the plants in the afternoon hours, when there is full sun.

Avoid any fertilisation

Winter is not the best season to fertilise the plants as it can stress the roots and the plant system into overgrowth. Winters are the months of slow growth, so try to not add any fertiliser but just enrich the soil with organic compost.

Opt for winter-friendly plants

If you hate to see the garden all dry and wilted and would like some colours even in the winter months, opt for plants that grow and continue to flower through the winters. Flowers like Pansies, herbs like Mint, and plants like Spider plants can continue growing even in winter.
