Grow and care for succulents

One of the most low-maintenance plants are undoubtedly the succulents. They need minimal water, minimal sunlight, the care is practically negligible, and they are all so beautiful and aesthetic to look at. And so, here we mention 10 tips to grow and propagate succulents.

Pick the right pots

Succulents do not need excess watering and they are pretty delicate to begin with. So, only pick pots that have good drainage holes as waterlogging in the succulents will result in quick wilting and death of the plant. Also, for indoor succulents, small ceramic pots will do.

Keep a good soil mix

A person buys a succulent with the thought that they need very less care. And if you are already giving them limited water and sunlight, make sure the soil mix is excellent for them to grow and propagate.

Try giving them bright light

Succulents can grow without direct sunlight, but it is always better to let them in bright light whenever possible. This could be direct sunlight for about 2-4 hours, or even bright artificial light inside the home.

Never water them everyday

A succulent, especially one that is grown indoors, does not need water everyday. Water it once every 2-3 days, or more if the soil feels dry to touch. As an alternate, you can mist the leaves and stems everyday to maintain some freshness.

It is best not propagated in cold

It is best to not cut and propagate the succulents in the winters. Winters are already slow-growing stages and nature is in perfect rest during this time. So, care for the succulents you already have, and don’t try overgrowing in the cold season.

Don’t invest in expensive fertilisers

One of the best parts about growing succulents is that they cut the growing costs almost in half. If you are growing succulents indoors, don’t invest in expensive fertilisers as homemade solutions like rice water or banana peel water will do the trick for them.

Don’t jump to the hard succulents

If you are a beginner and succulents are new to you, go for easy to grow and care for varieties. For example, Aloe vera, Jade, Bunny ear cactus, Echeveria, and the likes are perfect options.

Propagate with cutting

If you wish to propagate a succulent, there is no need to pick it out with the root. Succulents are easy to propagate and simply cutting a healthy stem from the plant and adding it to another pot can help in propagation.

Don’t ignore pruning

Even succulents like Jade and Aloe vera need the occasional pruning to keep them looking good and healthy. Cut off any yellow leaves or dying stems as soon as possible from the plant to keep it growing.
