How to prevent overheating in AC

As the summer heat starts kicking in, the Air Conditioner becomes the only lifesaver. But with the cooling of the AC, also comes distressing news where the AC catches fire, breaks down, leads to high bills, and much more. To prevent something like this, we mention 10 tips.

Clean and replace the filters

One of the simplest steps to prevent AC overheating is to clean and replace the air filters regularly. Try cleaning them once a month, and replace them every season if possible as dirty filters block airflow, making the AC work harder and causing it to heat up.

Keep the outdoor unit clean

Your air conditioner's outdoor unit needs proper airflow to release heat, and if it is covered in dust or placed too close to a wall, it will not function properly and result in overheating.

Don’t always turn it to 16 degrees

Running your AC at the lowest setting, which is usually 16°, will put extra pressure on the compressor. Instead, use it for a longer time at a higher temperature between 23-26 degrees.

Use fans for better cooling

Do not rely 24*7 on the AC to keep the room cool. Use ceiling fans with the AC, and when it starts getting chilly, switch the AC off for at least 2-4 hours.

Keep the room cool without AC if possible

If hot air is constantly entering the room from a window or a crack, the AC has to work harder to keep it all cool and maintained. So make sure the windows are all sealed and shut so that quick cooling can happen.

Get it serviced

Just like big appliances, ACs also need to be serviced for smooth functioning. And thus it is important to get it checked before the start of a new season. The technicians clean it, repair it, change the filters, and more, ensuring smooth function.

Ventilation around the AC unit

Another thing to make sure of to prevent overheating of the AC is that it should be unobstructed. Don’t keep any shelves, cupboards, or wall hangings right in front of it.

Give it some time off

Giving the AC short breaks during the day will help prevent it from overheating, and so it is best to take a break every few hours. Suppose you switch the AC on and the room feels chilly in about an hour, switch the AC off for the next few hours.

Invest in an energy-efficient AC

Sometimes, the problem isn’t maintenance, but the wrong AC type. A small AC will struggle to cool a large room, and a bigger one will put too much load on the system. So invest in the right-sized and energy-efficient model.

Timers at night

People often sleep while the AC is switched on, and the time averages to about 8-10 hours. This can often lead to overheating, and so it is best to set timers at night. Either keep the AC on a 24-26 degree temperature, or set a timer so that it shuts off in the next 4-6 hours.
