Gardening on a budget

Having a garden on the balcony or the terrace is simply delightful. The fragrance of the flowers, the beautiful pop of colour, and of course, the air-purifying abilities of some plants makes it worthwhile. And so, here we mention how to grow a budget-friendly garden at home.

Start small

First things first, to make the gardening experience budget-friendly, start small. Start with herbs that you can buy for cheap in the market, use some of them, and save some to propagate them. For example, buy some Dhaniya and then grow it in water, buy mint and then pot it.

Don’t jump on pots

Instead of going all out and buying huge clay pots, ceramic pots, and more, DIY it all. Use old bottles, cans, buckets, or even broken mugs and jugs as pots. Just drain a hole below to ensure the excess water flows out and you are good to go.

Reuse the seeds

There are so many fruit and vegetable plants that can be grown at home from the seeds you have at home. Be it cherry tomatoes, chillies, strawberries, or even bell peppers, they can all be grown from the fruit or vegetable that you have at home.

Don’t buy compost

While this one might take some time, making your own compost can save a bit of money in your gardening journey. Just take an empty bucket and dump your coffee grounds, eggshells, vegetable peels, and the likes into it. Overtime it will decompose and make organic compost.

Buy some low-maintenance plants

Low-maintenance plants do not need much fertilising, thawing, mulching, or even pruning. And so, you will save a ton of money in the long run. Buy succulents, money plants, snake plant, Aloe vera, and the likes and keep propagating them with the initial plant.

Don’t invest on tools

In the initial months of your gardening, it is not necessary to buy gardening tools. Instead of purchasing the shovels and scrapers, just use old spoons for turning the soil around, a form for scraping it, an old bottle with holes in the cap for watering, and more DIYs can be done.

Save money on soil mix

Instead of buying expensive potting mixes, create your own by mixing garden soil with homemade compost, sand from the construction sites, and cocopeat.

Swap cuttings with others

If you have more friends who are into gardening, ask for a cutting! A cutting from their marigold plant, one from the Pothos, and another from the beautiful Lily growing in their garden. The 'sharing is caring' can work really well for budget gardeners.
