Grow strawberries at home

Choose the right variety of seeds or runner

One of the first steps is to choose the variety of strawberry you wish to grow. If you want the fruits to be produced quickly, it is best to grow with runners, and if you wish to savour the process, just pick out the seeds from the strawberry you have at home.

How to grow with seeds

To grow from seeds, gently pick out the seeds from the strawberries you have at home. Put them onto a tissue paper, lightly mist it, and then keep in the sun till they dry. Once dried out, plant these in pots and soil, and keep the soil moist at all times for germination.

The quick method

The fastest method to grow is through Runners, which are baby plants from mature strawberries, or with young transplants from a nursery. If you grow strawberries from seeds, there is no guarantee that it will produce fruits, but with runners, you will see quick harvest.

The best container for strawberries

To grow Strawberries, you do not need a super deep or wide container, a regular pot that is about 8 inches deep will do. Or you can use grow bags that are wider than deep, as these fruits do not spread their roots super wide.

The right soil composition

Strawberries like loose, slightly acidic soil, and it is best to use a mix of garden soil, compost, and a bit of sand or cocopeat in the mixture. In the initial days, do not add any fertilisers to the plant.

Sunlight needs of the Strawberry

One reason why Strawberry continues to grow even in summers is because it is a sun-loving plant. Strawberry plants, no matter at which stage, need atleast 4 hours of sunlight daily, and an additional 2-3 hours of indirect sunlight as well.

Watering schedule

In the germination stage, when growing through seeds, it is best to keep the soil moist, and the area around the seeds humid. And if you are growing through runners or cuttings, in peak summers water them once a day, and mist the soil twice to maintain moisture.

Fertiliser for the plant

When growing through runners, feed the strawberry liquid-based fertiliser once a month, or twice a month if you do not see fruits for an extended period. The strawberry emerges from a flower, so make sure to not pluck it out.

The first fruit

If you plant runners or young transplants, you can expect to see the first fruits in about 3-5 months, or even sooner if the soil is nutrient-rich and the runners are of good quality. If you grow through seeds, it might take about 8 months or more for the first strawberry.

When to harvest

Strawberries are ready to pick when they’re fully red and shiny. And don’t cut them off completely from the plant, instead, pick them by just twisting the stem gently.
