Insectivores in the wild

Most people usually divide animals into two: Herbivores and Carnivores. But in the wild, there are certain animals that feast on insects all their life, and thus they become insectivorous animals. Here we mention some of them.

Anteater

One of the most famous insectivores is the Anteater. Their diet mainly consists of ants and termites, and they use their long, sticky tongues to reach into anthills and scoop out their food.

Aardwolf

Aardwolves are members of the hyena family, look very similar to them too, but do not have the same diet as of Hyenas. The Aardwolves are insectivorous in nature and feed mostly on termites.

Pangolin

The scaly creatures of the wild, Pangolins are covered in protective scales, and these too are insectivores. Pangolins are known to use their claws to dig into dirt nests and catch insects.

Numbat

Another unique creature of the wild that feeds on insects and termites is the Numbat. It looks like a mix between a squirrel (for the body) and a snake (for its tongue), and they are known to feed on termites.

Toads

While not all, some toads are completely insectivorous in nature. They only eat insects, including flies, beetles, and ants, and use their quick, sticky tongues to catch prey.

Frogmouth

Don’t be deceived by their names, because Frogmouths are actually nocturnal birds! These birds survive by feeding on insects like moths, beetles, and grasshoppers, and their wide mouths help them capture flying insects with ease.

Hedgehog

Although some hedgehogs are known to eat small animals occasionally, many only rely on insects like worms, beetles, and caterpillars for their food.

Armadillos

It is believed that some species of Armadillos, and most Armadillos in some situations, only feast on insects like ants, termites, and beetles. They use their claws to dig into soil and nests, and take out their food.

Nightjar

Another bird that feeds primarily on insects and comes in the insectivorous list is the Nightjar. They feed on flying insects, such as moths and beetles, and are excellent hunters, catching their food midair.
