World Test Championship Points Table: India drop to second as Australia claim top spot

India's dreams of making it to the World Test Championship (WTC) final were severely dented after New Zealand handed them a historic 0-3 series whitewash at home. It was their first-ever series loss in such a manner on home soil, as India lost the third Test by 25 runs at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

Consequently, India slipped to second place in the WTC standings with 58.33 percentage points (PCT), trailing Australia's 62.50 PCT.

India had dominated the WTC standings for most of the 2024-25 cycle but their recent three consecutive losses cost them their top spot. They now face a tough challenge in reclaiming their position as several teams are closely competing.

Match Report: New Zealand make history as India suffer first ever 0-3 Test series whitewash

India suffered the ignominy of being whitewashed at home for the first time in more than 24 years by losing the third Test against New Zealand by 25 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.

This is the first time that India have been whitewashed 0-3 in a home Test series and New Zealand became the first team to do so.

The Kiwis won the first Test in Bengaluru by 8 wickets and the second Test in Pune by 113 runs.

Chasing a 147-run target, India suffered a now familiar batting collapse to be tottering at 29/5, before Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja steadied the proceedings with a 42-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Yeah, absolutely, you know, losing a series, losing a Test is never easy, not easily digestible. Again, we didn't play our best cricket, we know and we accept. They did so much better than us. We made a lot of mistakes and we'll have to accept it. We didn't put enough runs on the board in the 1st innings and we were behind in the game, here, we got a 30-run lead, we thought we were ahead, the target was achievable, we had to do better though. You want runs on the board as well, that's something that was there in my mind, it didn't come off and when it happens, it doesn't look great. There are certain ideas on my mind when I go to bat, but in this series, it didn't come off and that's disappointing for me. Those guys showed how to bat on these surfaces, you've got to be ahead and be proactive, we are playing on such pitches in the last 3-4 years, we know how to play. But this series, it didn't come off and that's going to hurt. Also, I wasn't at my best with both bat and as a captain, that's something that'll rankle me. But, we didn't perform well collectively and that's the reason for these losses.

The hosts still need 55 runs to secure a consolation win after already conceding the three-match series.

New Zealand, who were bowled out for 174 in their second innings earlier in the morning, handed India a target that seemed achievable. India vs New Zealand Live Score, 3rd Test Day 3: New Zealand completed an unprecedented 3-0 series sweep in India as the Black Caps dismissed the hosts for 121 on a tricky wicket to secure a 25-run victory on day three of the third and final test in Mumbai on Sunday.

The last time India were blanked at home was in 2000, in a two-match series against South Africa. Rohit Sharma's side will be feeling the heat ahead of a challenging five-match series against Australia.

Rishabh Pant was the lone Indian batsman to show resistance as he made a sublime 64 after the hosts were reduced to 29-5 on a turning Wankhede Stadium track.

Ajaz Patel claimed 6-57, his second five-wicket haul in the match, to skittle the hosts again.

Sharma threw the first punch by stepping out of his crease to hit Matt Henry for a four in the opening over, but the skipper's disappointing recent run of form continued when he fell for 11 after a rash shot against the same bowler.

Patel made it two wickets in two overs as Shubman Gill, who had scored a splendid 90 in the first innings, left a ball that crashed into the stumps and departed for one.

Virat Kohli did not last long after arriving at the crease as he edged Patel back to slip on one to leave India in trouble at 18-3 on a tricky Wankhede Stadium pitch.

The crowd fell silent again as Yashasvi Jaiswal was trapped lbw for five by Glenn Phillips and Sarfaraz Khan hit a full toss from Patel straight to Rachin Ravindra in the deep on one.

Ravindra Jadeja steadied the ship alongside Pant in a 42-run stand, but a stunning catch by Will Young meant India were on the ropes at 71-6.

Patel dismissed Pant following a New Zealand review after lunch, although the batsman appeared to suggest that he had not made contact with the ball before it was caught.

The runs dried up after that and India collapsed in a heap.

New Zealand resumed their second innings on 171-9 earlier, but India needed only 14 balls to bowl the Black Caps out, as Jadeja had Patel caught in the deep to end with fine figures of 5-55 after also bagging five in the first stanza.
