Cricket Australia has celebrated
Baisakhi by releasing a video featuring Australian cricketer Tanveer Sangha extending his wishes and highlighting the festival's spirit of unity and joy.
"Sasriyakal! As we celebrate Baisakhi, I wish everyone a wonderful day filled with joy, love and great cricketing spirit. Let’s play on," Sangha said in the video.
Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Baisakhi, a significant
Sikh festival, marks the establishment of the Khalsa in 1699. The Khalsa consists of devoted Sikhs who maintain the faith principles established by Guru Gobind Singh.
The celebration includes a Nagar Kirtan, where Sikhs carry their holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, in a procession. This is followed by a large mela, or festival, held in the grounds of the Gurdwara.
Several players of Indian Punjabi heritage have represented Australia at the national level, including Tanveer Sangha, Jason Sangha, and Gurinder Singh Sandhu.
The video has garnered positive responses from viewers worldwide, particularly resonating with the Indian diaspora and cricket fans. Cricket Australia's acknowledgement of Baisakhi showcases its dedication to embracing the diverse cultures that enrich the sport.
The organisation's initiative reflects the inclusive nature of cricket and its role in bringing together different communities through sporting excellence. It also highlights how sport can serve as a bridge between cultures, fostering understanding, respect, and celebration of heritage. By recognising such cultural milestones, Cricket Australia strengthens its bond with multicultural fans and reinforces the sport’s global spirit.
