Desert Vipers' newest recruit, David Payne, is set to use the upcoming ILT20 season as a platform to push for a return to England's white-ball setup in 2025. The left-arm seamer, who was instrumental in Gloucestershire's triumph in the 2024 T20 Blast with an incredible haul of 33 wickets in 17 matches, aims to make his case through stellar performances in the UAE franchise league.
Speaking on the Vipers Voices podcast, Payne emphasized the tournament's significance in showcasing his abilities. "The ILT20 is the perfect stage for me to keep pushing my case for England. If I perform well here, it's my way of saying: 'I'm still here,'" Payne stated.
Despite his domestic success, Payne has not featured for England since his lone ODI appearance against the Netherlands in 2022. However, his remarkable run in the T20 Blast, combined with a renewed focus on white-ball cricket, has reignited his ambitions.

"This summer was special," Payne said, reflecting on his 2024 season. "It was the first time I focused solely on white-ball cricket, and it made a huge difference. I entered the campaign fresh, motivated, and in great physical and mental shape, which allowed me to perform at my best."
Now ranked third in the all-time T20 Blast wicket-takers list with 193 scalps, Payne remains committed to evolving his craft. "One of my strengths has always been the willingness to adapt. Batters are constantly improving, so I need to stay ahead of them. Last season, I focused on swinging the ball upfront rather than overusing slower deliveries, and it paid off," he explained.

Payne's preparations for the ILT20 have included sessions at Gloucestershire's indoor facilities and a stint with the Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10. His experience in the UAE has provided valuable insights into conditions and strategies for success.

"The T10 was a great introduction to the ILT20," he shared. "The conditions varied with time of day, with dew aiding swing at night. It's given me valuable learnings to apply in January."
Looking ahead, Payne is optimistic about the Desert Vipers' chances. "We have a fantastic squad, both on and off the field. A close-knit team environment is crucial for success, and I see that potential here. I'm excited about our bowling group, especially our left-arm-heavy attack, which will be a unique challenge for batters."
The Desert Vipers begin their 2025 ILT20 campaign on day two of the tournament, facing the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders at Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Payne, confident in the team's balance and camaraderie, believes the Vipers are well-positioned to challenge for the title.
