NEW DELHI: SA20, the premier T20 tournament in South Africa, uses a points-based system to rank the teams, ensuring fairness while making the competition exciting.
For every match a team wins, they earn four points. In addition, a team can earn an extra bonus point, bringing their total to five, if they achieve a net run rate (NRR) that is 1.25 times higher than their opponents.
If a match is abandoned due to weather or other reasons, both teams receive two points each.

If two teams are tied on points, the first tie-breaker is the number of wins. If teams have the same number of wins, bonus points are then considered.
Only if teams are still tied after evaluating wins and bonus points does net run rate (NRR) serve as the final tie-breaker.

For example, before Wednesday’s match, both Joburg Super Kings (JSK) and Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) were on 10 points, each with two wins.
Despite the fact that SEC had a poorer NRR than JSK, they were placed third due to their higher number of bonus point victories.
The bonus point system is especially important in SA20 as it rewards dominant performances.
In the case of a bonus point, a team must finish with a net run rate 1.25 times higher than that of their opponent in that match. This incentivises teams to not just win, but win in a commanding manner.

For example, on Wednesday, Sunrisers Eastern Cape secured a bonus point after defeating the Pretoria Capitals by 52 runs. This marked their third consecutive bonus point victory, bringing their total to 15 points, although they remain in third position on the table.

Joburg Super Kings have 10 points, while Pretoria Capitals and Durban Super Giants are at the bottom of the table with 9 and 8 points, respectively.
