In a recent at GDC 2025, Marvel Rivals executive producer Danny Koo outlined the importance of having unpopular Marvel characters in the game to keep the roster interesting. There are currently 37 heroes in Marvel Rivals. This roster boasts a combination of iconic characters like Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America, while also including more unconventional and lesser-known characters from Marvel comics like Jeff the Land Shark, Magik, and Luna Snow.

While this is one of the primary reasons behind the success of Marvel Rivals, it is also important to have lesser-known characters with unique abilities to keep the gameplay and team compositions interesting.
This fact was outlined by Marvel Rivals Executive Producer, Danny Koo, who stated that NetEase games like adding unconventional characters from the Marvel comics that not everyone will know. Here’s what he said:
"Roughly 70% [of the roster] is made up of your greatest hits, like well-known heroes: Iron Man, Cap, etc. And then we throw in some curve balls; you might not even know who they are, to make the roster more interesting."
This statement confirms that NetEase Games is planning to release unpopular characters in Marvel Rivals alongside popular hits from the Marvel universe.
