Paige Bueckers’ WNBA hair transformation: Why she’s saying goodbye to braids

Paige Bueckers, renowned for her college basketball prowess and signature braids, embarks on her WNBA journey with the Dallas Wings, selected first overall in the 2025 draft. As she prepares for this new chapter, Bueckers hinted at a major hairstyle change, one that marks a fresh start, both on and off the court.

After years of dominating college basketball with her signature double braids, Paige Bueckers is stepping into her professional career with a brand-new look, and a new team. On Monday, April 14, Bueckers was selected first overall by the Dallas Wings in the 2025 WNBA Draft, marking the beginning of a highly anticipated new chapter in her career.
But it’s not just the court she’s making headlines on.
Ahead of the draft, Bueckers told PEOPLE exclusively that she plans to change up her hairstyle for her WNBA debut.
“I think maybe a little slick back ponytail might be the wave, maybe bun ponytail,” said Bueckers, 23. “But I need to give my hair a break and let it breathe a little bit, so, a break from the braids.”

The hairstyle change is a subtle but symbolic shift for Bueckers, who became instantly recognizable during her college years at UConn for her crisp court vision, clutch plays and yes, her iconic double braids.
During the draft night in New York City, Bueckers leaned into her fashion-forward identity as well. She arrived wearing a custom three-piece suit by Coach, embellished with crystals and paired with Coach’s Large Oversized Kisslock Frame Bag (retailing at $695) and platform loafers ($195), according to Page Six.
Her hair was styled in loose waves for the event—another departure from her usual look. Later in the night, she pulled it back into a sleek ponytail while wearing a second Coach outfit: a black suit with sequined lapels and straight-leg pants, accessorized with layered silver jewelry from KAY Jewelers, including hoop earrings, statement rings, and necklaces.
It wasn’t just a solo celebration. Bueckers was surrounded by family during the momentous night, including her parents, Bob Bueckers and Amy Fuller, and her younger siblings, Drew, Ryan, and Lauren.
When WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced her as the top pick, Bueckers became visibly emotional.
“I think ever since I was a young kid, I've always dreamed big and tried to manifest my goals and work extremely hard for them and keep the faith through them,” she told PEOPLE. “Know everything's in God's hands.”
“To be able to play this game, to be able to share this moment with my teammates, with my coaching staff, with my family, everybody who's here—it's meant everything,” she added.
Bueckers, who was sidelined for a full season at UConn due to a torn ACL before returning for her final year, has remained one of the most marketable and beloved figures in women’s basketball. Her first overall selection by the Wings only adds to the expectations for her pro career.
And while fans will be watching her every move on the court, many will also be watching to see how her new slicked-back ponytail plays into this next stage of her evolution, from college star to WNBA icon.
